Emotional Contagion

Emotional Contagion

Emotional contagion is when another person's emotions transfer over to you. Feelings really are contagious!

Details

Emotional contagion is the phenomenon where another person's emotions are unconsciously transmitted to you.

Have you ever noticed that spending a long time with someone who is depressed leaves you feeling down too, or that being around an energetic person makes you feel more lively? This happens thanks to mirror neurons in our brains.

Being influenced by the emotions of those around you is completely natural. That said, it's helpful to practice distinguishing between your own feelings and the feelings of others — Mindy can help you explore that.

💡 Real-Life Example

'Feeling your mood lift just from being next to someone who is smiling' — that's emotional contagion at work.
