cognitive dissonance

Cognitive Dissonance

The uncomfortable feeling that comes when your beliefs and your actions do not match.

Details

Cognitive dissonance is the mental discomfort that shows up when two beliefs clash, or when behavior does not fit what a person says they value. Because people usually want inner consistency, they often try to reduce that discomfort by changing behavior, changing beliefs, or justifying the mismatch. The discomfort can feel unpleasant, but it can also be the starting point for honest self-reflection and change.

💡 Real-Life Example

Someone says health matters a lot, but keeps smoking, and then feels inner tension every time they think about that contradiction.
