What Is Allostatic Load?
Allostatic load, proposed by neuroscientist Bruce McEwen in 1993, refers to the cumulative biological 'wear and tear' that results from chronic or repeated exposure to stress. Allostasis is the body's healthy process of adapting to stressors. When this adaptive response is triggered too often, too intensely, or never fully turns off, the accumulated burden becomes allostatic load.
Signs of High Allostatic Load
Physical: frequent illness, chronic fatigue, elevated blood pressure, sleep problems. Psychological: emotional over-reactivity, difficulty concentrating, increased anxiety and low mood, declining motivation.
Reducing the Load
Prioritise recovery time — stress recovery matters as much as stress itself. Make sleep a non-negotiable priority. Maintain supportive social connections. Regular exercise regulates cortisol. Address the root causes of chronic stress, not just the symptoms.
