Unconditional Positive Regard

Unconditional Positive Regard

It's the attitude of respecting and accepting someone exactly as they are, without any conditions attached.

Details

Unconditional Positive Regard (UPR) is one of the core therapeutic conditions proposed by Carl Rogers.

Rather than evaluating a client as 'a good person if they do this' or 'a bad person if they do that,' it means accepting them as a worthwhile person exactly as they are.

When someone experiences this kind of unconditional acceptance, they become able to accept themselves just as they are too.

💡 Real-Life Example

"Warmly accepting whatever a client shares without passing judgment on them" — this is unconditional positive regard in action.
