What Is Toxic Positivity?

Toxic positivity is the excessive promotion of positive thinking to the point where negative emotions are dismissed, minimized, or shamed. Phrases like 'just think positive,' 'everything happens for a reason,' or 'others have it worse' are well-intentioned, but they deny people the right to feel difficult emotions fully.

Common Toxic Positivity Phrases

  • "Just stay positive!" — implies negative feelings are wrong
  • "Others have it worse" — invalidates personal pain
  • "Good vibes only" — creates an atmosphere where struggle isn't welcome
  • "Happiness is a choice" — oversimplifies complex emotional states
  • The Alternative: Emotional Validation

Genuine support means sitting with someone in their pain without rushing to fix it. Try: 'That sounds really hard.' 'It makes sense you'd feel that way.' 'I'm here with you.'

Mindy says: "Sadness, fear, and anger aren't problems to fix — they're signs that you care deeply. You don't have to be positive right now. Your real feelings are welcome here."

    💡 Real-Life Example

When she said she was burned out at work, her coworker replied, 'Just stay positive!' — which made her feel unheard and even more alone.
