Test Anxiety

Test Anxiety

Test anxiety is a state of excessive tension and worry experienced during exams or evaluation situations. It's closely tied to the experience of not being able to perform to your actual ability, even when you've prepared thoroughly.

Details

What Is Test Anxiety?

Test anxiety is a state of intense worry, tension, and fear experienced before, during, or after an exam or evaluation. While a moderate level of nervousness can sharpen focus, excessive anxiety actually interferes with thinking and memory, preventing you from performing at your true level.

What Are the Symptoms?

Before an exam, you might struggle to sleep or have digestive problems. During the test, your mind may go completely blank, and information you knew well simply won't come to you. You may notice your heart racing, your palms sweating, or feelings of stomachache and dizziness. Even after the exam, you may be haunted by thoughts like 'I probably bombed it again.'

Why Does Test Anxiety Develop?

Past experiences of failure on exams, high expectations from parents or others, perfectionist tendencies, and low confidence in your own abilities can all contribute. Extreme thinking patterns such as 'If I fail this test, my life is over' also fuel anxiety.

How Can You Overcome It?

Building confidence through a structured study plan is the foundation. Deep breathing and muscle relaxation techniques before an exam can help reduce physical tension. Practicing cognitive restructuring — replacing thoughts with more realistic ones like 'This test does not define my worth' — is also very helpful. Getting comfortable with exam conditions through practice tests can be equally effective.

A word from Mindy: Feeling nervous about a test shows just how much you care about doing well. But please remember — a test result does not determine everything about you. You are so much more valuable than any exam score.

💡 Real-Life Example

A classic experience of test anxiety is studying hard, then the moment you receive the exam paper, your mind goes completely blank — and you can't answer even the questions you knew.
