Understanding the Mind

Selective Attention

Selective Attention

It's the ability to focus on specific information out of countless stimuli around you. What you notice changes depending on what's on your mind.

Details

Selective attention means focusing your attention on specific information out of the many stimuli surrounding you.

This is a natural function of our brain — it simply can't process everything at once. However, when you're feeling anxious or depressed, your attention tends to get pulled toward negative information.

"Where is my attention going right now?" Just noticing this can help you find balance again. — Mindy

💡 Real-Life Example

"When you're full of worry, only the warning signs seem to catch your eye" — that's selective attention at work.
