Re-experiencing

Re-experiencing

Re-experiencing is a symptom where a person repeatedly relives a traumatic event through flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive memories.

Details

Re-experiencing is a core symptom of PTSD, in which traumatic events involuntarily and repeatedly come to mind. It includes flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive memories, and psychological or physiological reactions triggered by reminders of the trauma. It occurs regardless of one's will, causing the fear and distress of the past to be felt again in the present. This happens because the brain has not been able to properly process the traumatic memory.

Specialized treatments such as EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Prolonged Exposure Therapy can effectively reduce re-experiencing symptoms. If you're struggling with these experiences, Mindy is here to support you.

💡 Real-Life Example

When a traumatic scene suddenly flashes into your mind, or when the event replays itself in your dreams — that is re-experiencing.
