Understanding the Mind

Personalization

Personalization

Personalization is the tendency to blame yourself for things that have nothing to do with you.

Details

Personalization is a cognitive distortion where you unnecessarily attribute the cause of external events to yourself.

For example, thinking "My friend is in a bad mood because I must have done something wrong." But other people's feelings and situations are the result of many factors working together.

Not everything is your responsibility. Try to distinguish between what you can control and what you cannot. — Mindy

💡 Real-Life Example

"When a team project doesn't go well, feeling 'It's all my fault'" — that's personalization.
