Understanding the Mind

Overgeneralization

Overgeneralization

It's when you draw broad conclusions about all situations based on just one or two experiences.

Details

Overgeneralization is a cognitive distortion where a single negative experience is applied to all situations.

If you find yourself frequently using words like 'always,' 'never,' or 'every time,' you may be overgeneralizing. Remember that one failure doesn't mean permanent failure.

Try practicing reframing your thoughts: 'It didn't work out this time, but next time could be different.' — Mindy

💡 Real-Life Example

'Failing one job interview and thinking, "I always fail"' — that's overgeneralization.
