What Is a Neural Circuit?

A neural circuit is a group of interconnected neurons that work together to perform a specific function or behavior. Much like an electrical circuit, individual neurons link together to send and receive information, collectively producing a single function.

How Neural Circuits Work

When one neuron sends an electrical signal, it passes through a synapse to the next neuron. As multiple neurons activate in sequence, a single 'circuit' comes to life. The more the same circuit is activated repeatedly, the stronger its connections become. This is the principle known as "Neurons that fire together, wire together."
