Negativity Bias

Negativity Bias

We tend to react more strongly to negative things than positive ones, and remember them longer.

Details

Negativity bias is a characteristic of our brain where, given a positive and negative experience of equal intensity, we respond more strongly to the negative one.

This is a function that evolved to help us detect danger quickly. While it was helpful for survival, in modern life it can create unnecessary worry or feelings of sadness.

By consciously practicing noticing good things and expressing gratitude, you can reduce the influence of this bias. — Mindy

💡 Real-Life Example

"Even after receiving ten compliments, a single criticism sticks in your memory far longer" — that's negativity bias at work.
