Understanding the Mind

Mind Reading

Mind Reading

Mind reading is when you assume you know what someone else is thinking without checking. You tell yourself, 'They must be thinking this,' without any confirmation.

Details

Mind reading is a cognitive distortion where you guess what another person is thinking or intending — entirely on your own, without verifying it with them.

'They're definitely looking down on me,' 'They must be laughing at me inside' — these kinds of assumptions are usually inaccurate. After all, none of us can truly read another person's mind.

Instead of acting on unverified assumptions, it's far more helpful to ask directly or consider other possible explanations. — Mindy

💡 Real-Life Example

'When a friend takes a long time to reply, thinking "They must not like me anymore"' — that's mind reading.
