What is the Meaning of Life?
Meaning of life refers to a psychological state in which a person feels a sense of purpose, value, and coherence about their existence and life. It is a central theme in existential psychology, and Viktor Frankl is a pioneer in this field.
Frankl's Logotherapy
Drawing on his experiences in Nazi concentration camps, Frankl argued that the most fundamental human motivation is the will to find meaning. He identified three pathways to discovering meaning:
1. Creative Values: Contributing something to the world through work, creations, or actions
2. Experiential Values: Experiencing beauty and truth through nature, art, love, and more
3. Attitudinal Values: Choosing a meaningful attitude even in the face of unavoidable suffering
Relationship to Psychological Health
Research shows that people who feel a sense of meaning in life experience lower depression and anxiety, have greater ability to cope with stress, and report higher overall life satisfaction. Conversely, loss of meaning (existential vacuum) is associated with depression, addiction, and suicide risk.
Finding Meaning
Meaning in life doesn't have to be grand. It can be found in small everyday purposes, a sense of connection in relationships, and living in alignment with one's own values. Through counseling with Mindy, you can explore what meaning looks like for you personally.
