Details

Marsha Linehan (1943–)

Marsha Linehan is an American psychologist and the founder of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). She developed a groundbreaking treatment for people with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and chronic suicidal urges — individuals who had found little relief from existing therapies.

The core of DBT is Dialectics — the idea of holding two seemingly contradictory truths at the same time. The most central dialectical tension is the balance between Acceptance and Change: fully accepting a person as they are, while simultaneously supporting them in building a better life.

DBT teaches four core skill sets: Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance. In 2011, Linehan publicly disclosed that she herself had experienced serious mental health struggles in her youth, showing remarkable courage in bridging the divide between therapist and lived experience.

💡 Real-Life Example

Accepting yourself exactly as you are, while also striving to change — both of these are necessary at the same time.
