Law of Reciprocity

Law of Reciprocity

It's the psychological obligation to give back when you receive something. It can work through genuine goodwill, but it can also be exploited as a tool of manipulation.

Details

The Law of Reciprocity is one of the six principles of persuasion proposed by social psychologist Robert Cialdini. Humans have a deep psychological norm ingrained in them: "if you receive, you must repay."

How the Law of Reciprocity Works

When someone does us a favor, we incur a psychological "debt." Not repaying this debt creates an uncomfortable feeling. This is a very powerful instinct formed as humanity evolved as social animals.

Positive Uses

The Law of Reciprocity is a cornerstone of maintaining society:

  • When a neighbor helps us, we want to return the favor
  • When we receive a gift, we feel the urge to reciprocate
  • When shown kindness, we respond with kindness

    In Marketing

Free samples and free trials are offered to then drive purchases. The "door-in-the-face" technique — giving something small first and then asking for something big — also falls under this.

    In Personal Relationships

A manipulative person does a small favor and then demands a much larger return. They weaponize past kindness with phrases like "Remember when I did that for you?"

    In the Workplace

A boss gives a small perk (like allowing early departure) and later assigns excessive work, saying "I covered for you back then" — this is a common pattern.

    How to Protect Yourself

  • It's okay to decline unwanted favors
  • Practice saying "Thank you, but I'm fine"
  • Assess whether the ratio of what you received to what is being asked is reasonable
  • Examine whether the other person's kindness is genuine or has an ulterior motive
  • Reciprocity is a beautiful social norm, but if it starts to feel like a burden or you feel taken advantage of, it's okay to say no. — Mindy
