Intrusive Thoughts

Intrusive Thoughts

Intrusive thoughts are unpleasant or frightening thoughts that suddenly pop into your mind even when you don't want them to.

Details

Intrusive thoughts are unwanted thoughts, images, or impulses that arise spontaneously.

This is a normal experience that everyone has. However, it can become a problem when you attach meaning to these thoughts ('The fact that I'm thinking this means I'm a dangerous person') and become anxious about them.

Intrusive thoughts are simply 'brain noise.' Practicing noticing them without giving them importance can be very helpful — Mindy can work with you on exactly that.

💡 Real-Life Example

'When standing somewhere high up, suddenly having an unwanted thought like "What if I jumped?"' is a classic example of an intrusive thought.
