Idealization and Devaluation

Idealization and Devaluation

This is a pattern where someone is placed on a pedestal as perfect, then torn down as the worst when disappointment sets in.

Details

Idealization and devaluation is a pattern where your view of others swings between two extreme opposites.

At first, you see someone as completely perfect — but even a small disappointment can lead to viewing them in an extremely negative light. This pattern is connected to a defense mechanism called splitting.

Noticing this pattern is the first step. Try reminding yourself: 'This person is neither perfect nor the worst — they're an ordinary person with both strengths and flaws.' If this pattern feels familiar in your relationships, Mindy is here to explore it with you.

💡 Real-Life Example

Calling a new friend 'the most amazing person ever,' then suddenly feeling like they are 'absolutely the worst' after a minor letdown.
