Competence

Competence

The feeling that you can handle challenges effectively and actually having the ability to do so.

Details

Competence is that inner sense of being capable — the confidence that you can take on tasks and succeed at them. It's one of the three core psychological needs in self-determination theory, alongside autonomy and connection. When you feel competent, you're more motivated to keep growing, your self-esteem gets a natural boost, and life feels more satisfying overall. On the flip side, repeated setbacks or harsh criticism can chip away at this feeling, making it harder to try again — but rebuilding it is always possible, one small win at a time.

💡 Real-Life Example

After weeks of practicing a new recipe, you finally nail it and serve a delicious dinner to your family — that warm rush of pride you feel in that moment is competence in action.
