Behavioral addiction

Behavioral Addiction

A pattern where a behavior like gaming, gambling, shopping, or scrolling starts to feel hard to stop.

Details

Behavioral addiction means a person feels pulled toward a behavior again and again, even when it starts causing problems. Unlike substance addiction, the addiction is not to alcohol or drugs, but to an activity such as gambling, gaming, shopping, pornography, social media, or online browsing.

At first the behavior may feel relieving, exciting, or comforting. Over time, it can start taking over more space, making it harder to stop, cut back, or think about anything else. The person may keep doing it even when it affects sleep, money, school, work, or relationships.

This is not just about having poor self-control. When a behavior becomes addictive, support can help, and treatment is possible.

💡 Real-Life Example

Someone says they will only check social media for ten minutes, but ends up scrolling for hours every night and falling behind at work.
