Transformative Learning

Transformative Learning

Transformative learning is a deep learning process that fundamentally changes the framework of your existing thoughts and beliefs. It's an experience where the very lens through which you see the world becomes different.

Details

What is Transformative Learning?

Transformative Learning is a concept proposed by adult education scholar Jack Mezirow, referring to a learning experience in which the very framework of one's existing perspectives, assumptions, and beliefs undergoes fundamental change.

How It Differs from Ordinary Learning

  • Ordinary learning: Adding new knowledge or skills within an existing framework
  • Transformative learning: Questioning the existing framework itself and shifting to a new perspective
  • For example, learning a new recipe is ordinary learning — but having a fundamental change in your understanding of 'what healthy eating really means' is transformative learning.

    The Process of Transformative Learning

Mindy will walk you through how transformative learning unfolds:

  • A disorienting experience: You encounter something that your existing beliefs cannot explain
  • Self-examination: You begin to reflect on your own assumptions and beliefs
  • Critical reflection: You deeply explore 'Why did I think this way?'
  • Exploring new perspectives: You openly examine different possibilities and viewpoints
  • Perspective transformation: You embrace a new framework for seeing the world
  • Behavioral change: Your way of living shifts to align with your changed perspective
  • Ways to Encourage Transformative Learning

  • Encounter diverse perspectives: Listen to the stories of people with different backgrounds and experiences from your own
  • Practice critical thinking: Question the things you take for granted
  • Dialogue and discussion: Examine your own perspectives through deep conversation
  • New experiences: Step outside familiar environments and seek out unfamiliar experiences
  • A Word from Mindy

Transformative learning can sometimes feel uncomfortable and disorienting. But once you move through that process, you'll find yourself able to see the world with a broader and deeper vision. Growing pains are proof that growth is happening.

    💡 Real-Life Example

After returning from an overseas volunteer trip, a person's existing belief that 'success means earning a lot of money' shifts to 'genuine success is found in meaningful relationships and contribution' — this is an example of transformative learning.
