Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

A non-invasive treatment that applies a magnetic field over the scalp to stimulate specific areas of the brain. It has been proven effective especially for treating depression that does not respond to medication.

Details

What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that places a magnetic coil on the scalp and generates magnetic field pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain. It is performed without surgery or anesthesia and can be conveniently received on an outpatient basis.

How TMS Works

The magnetic field generated by the coil passes through the skull and activates nerve cells on the surface of the brain. It primarily stimulates the left prefrontal cortex, a region closely associated with mood regulation. Repetitive TMS (rTMS), which delivers repeated stimulation, is the most commonly used form and takes approximately 20–40 minutes per session.

Treatment Applications

  • Treatment-resistant depression: Most widely used for depression that does not respond to medication
  • Anxiety disorders: Research is ongoing into its use for relieving anxiety symptoms
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder: One of the FDA-approved applications
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder: Used to help improve trauma-related symptoms
  • Chronic pain: Also used as a supplementary approach to pain management
  • Mindy's Note

Mindy believes TMS can be another beacon of hope for those struggling with mental health challenges. It is truly reassuring to know that even when medication is not an option, there are still other approaches to try without giving up. As with all treatments, however, the process of consulting thoroughly with a specialist and finding the right approach for you is what matters most.

    💡 Real-Life Example

A patient whose depression had not improved with medication gradually experienced a lift in mood through TMS treatment.
