What is Thought Broadcasting?
Thought broadcasting is a symptom in which a person believes their thoughts are spreading outward — like a radio signal — so that others can hear or know what they are thinking. This is not a normal experience; it represents a disturbance in the thought process and is a condition that requires professional support.
What Does the Experience Feel Like?
A person may develop strong convictions such as 'Everyone can hear my thoughts' or 'People are reading my mind.' This can lead to intense anxiety around other people, avoidance of social situations, and a deep sense of isolation.
What Conditions Are Associated With It?
Thought broadcasting appears most commonly as a symptom of schizophrenia. Along with thought insertion (the feeling that someone else's thoughts are entering one's mind) and thought withdrawal (the feeling that someone is removing one's thoughts), it is classified as a core symptom of thought disorder. It can also occur rarely during severe manic or depressive episodes in bipolar disorder.
How Is It Treated?
Antipsychotic medications can effectively reduce thought broadcasting symptoms. Alongside medication, psychological counseling is important for addressing the anxiety and isolation caused by the experience. Understanding and support from family and those close to the person also play a significant role in recovery.

💡 Real-Life Example
An example of thought broadcasting is sitting in a café and feeling so certain that everyone around you knows exactly what you are thinking that you become overwhelmed with anxiety and have to leave.
