Details

What Is Thought Insertion?

Thought insertion is a symptom in which a person is convinced that the thoughts appearing in their mind are not their own, but have been placed there by someone from the outside. The person experiences something like: 'This thought isn't mine — someone put it in my head.'

What Does the Experience Feel Like?

Unfamiliar thoughts arise in the mind independently of the person's own will, and they believe these thoughts have been inserted by an external force — such as a specific individual, an organization, or a supernatural entity. This experience can feel deeply confusing and frightening, and may cause significant disruption to one's sense of identity.

How Is It Different from Intrusive Thoughts?

With ordinary intrusive thoughts, unwanted thoughts may arise, but the person still recognizes 'this is my thought.' Thought insertion is qualitatively different: the person holds a firm belief that the thought does not belong to them and has come from an outside source.

Treatment and Recovery

Thought insertion is one of the primary symptoms of schizophrenia, and antipsychotic medication is an effective treatment. Once symptoms are stabilized with medication, psychological counseling can help address the anxiety and confusion caused by the experience. The earlier treatment begins, the better the prognosis.
