Splitting

Splitting

Splitting is a defense mechanism where a person sees others or situations as entirely good or entirely bad, with no middle ground.

Details

Splitting is a defense mechanism where you perceive yourself and others in all-or-nothing extremes — either 'all good' or 'all bad.'

It commonly appears in borderline personality disorder, but anyone can use it temporarily during times of intense stress. It makes it difficult to hold an integrated view, such as 'this person has both good and bad qualities.'

When you notice splitting happening, try asking yourself: 'What other sides does this person have?' Over time, this can help you develop a more balanced and integrated perspective. — Mindy

💡 Real-Life Example

'Yesterday they were the best friend in the world — today they feel like my worst enemy.'
