Solastalgia

Solastalgia is the distress caused by environmental change in one's home environment — a homesickness for a place you haven't left, because that place has changed around you.

Details

What is Solastalgia?

Coined by philosopher Glenn Albrecht in 2003, solastalgia describes the psychological distress caused by changes to one's home environment. Unlike nostalgia — longing for a place you've left — solastalgia is the grief of watching your current home transform into something unrecognizable.

Common Triggers

  • Landscapes changed by mining, development, or urbanization
  • Seasonal patterns disrupted by climate change
  • Familiar ecosystems altered by drought, wildfire, or flood
  • Finding Solace

Acknowledge that your grief is a testament to your love for a place. Balance mourning what is lost with gratitude for what remains. Mindy holds space for your longing.

    💡 Real-Life Example

He returned to his childhood beach to find the familiar dunes replaced by concrete barriers, and felt a grief he couldn't name.
