What Are Social Determinants of Health?
Social determinants of health refer to the conditions in the environments where people are born, grow up, work, and age, and how these conditions affect their health. An individual's health is not determined solely by personal choices — it is greatly shaped by social environment.
Key Determinants
Social determinants of health include economic stability (income, employment), access to and quality of education, access to healthcare, neighborhood and built environment (housing, transportation, safety), and social and community context (social support, discrimination, isolation).
Health Inequalities
These social factors create health inequalities. People with lower incomes, minority groups, and those with limited educational opportunities face greater health risks and are more likely to experience mental health problems. Research consistently shows that stress, anxiety, and depression are closely linked to socioeconomic conditions.
Psychological Perspective
Health psychology places great importance on studying how social determinants affect psychological well-being. Economic insecurity, experiences of discrimination, and social isolation become sources of chronic stress, which impacts both physical and mental health.
A Word from Mindy
Health is not solely your personal responsibility. Even when your circumstances are difficult, you can protect your mental well-being through small connections and support. Seeking help is never something to be ashamed of.
💡 Real-Life Example
Two people with the same illness can have vastly different treatment outcomes and quality of life depending on their access to healthcare and level of social support — this is a clear illustration of the social determinants of health.
