What is Sobriety?

Sobriety is the state of stopping and maintaining abstinence from alcohol or other addictive substances. In a broader sense, it also refers to a way of living with a clear mind, free from addictive behavioral patterns.

The Difference Between Abstinence and Sobriety

  • Abstinence: Completely refraining from using a specific substance
  • Sobriety: Not only refraining from substances, but also maintaining emotional and mental well-being
  • In other words, sobriety is a broader concept than abstinence. Even if someone isn't drinking, if they are caught in anger, resentment, or self-destructive behavior, it's difficult to call that true sobriety.

    The Journey of Sobriety

Mindy wants to emphasize that sobriety is a journey, not a destination. Each day is a series of choices, and it's a process of making slightly healthier decisions every day.

There are important elements in the journey of sobriety:

  • Maintaining motivation: Frequently reminding yourself why you chose sobriety
  • Support system: Having a strong network of family, friends, and self-help groups
  • Coping skills: Learning healthy ways to handle temptation and stress
  • Rebuilding life: Recovering relationships, work, and health damaged by addiction
  • Self-care: Basic self-management such as adequate sleep, nutrition, and exercise
  • It's Okay to Stumble

There may be moments when you slip on the path of sobriety. But one mistake doesn't have to bring everything crashing down. Mindy believes that you have the strength to get back up.

What matters is not perfection, but the heart that refuses to give up. Try to focus on the choices of today, of this very moment.

    💡 Real-Life Example

Someone who struggled with alcohol dependence for 10 years went through treatment, has been alcohol-free for 3 years, rebuilt their family relationships, and now enjoys hobbies and a fulfilling life — that is what true sobriety looks like.
