What is Separation Anxiety in Adults?
Adult separation anxiety is a condition where a person experiences excessive anxiety and distress when separated from, or anticipating separation from, an attachment figure (such as a spouse, romantic partner, parent, or child). While it is commonly thought to affect only young children, it is a very real difficulty that can occur in adults as well.
How Does It Appear?
It may show up as intense anxiety when a loved one goes out, difficulty tolerating being alone, or excessive worry that something bad will happen to the other person. Even a slight delay in a partner's response can trigger extreme anxiety, and some people may give up work or social activities to avoid situations involving separation.
Causes and Related Factors
Insecure attachment in childhood, significant experiences of loss, trauma, or betrayal in relationships can all contribute to adult separation anxiety. It frequently co-occurs with other anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder.
