Understanding the Mind

Self-Concept

Self-Concept

Self-concept is your own thoughts and beliefs about 'who you are' as a person.

Details

Self-concept is the total collection of perceptions, beliefs, and evaluations you hold about yourself.

It is essentially your answer to the question 'Who am I?' It includes beliefs about your abilities, personality, values, and the roles you play in life. Self-concept is shaped through experience and can change over time.

A healthy self-concept is both realistic and positive. — Mindy often says it's healthiest when you can see your strengths and weaknesses in a balanced way.

💡 Real-Life Example

'I am a kind person,' 'I'm not very good at math' — these kinds of thoughts and beliefs you hold about yourself are examples of self-concept.
