Role Conflict

Role Conflict

Role conflict is the tension you feel when you are expected to fulfill two or more roles whose demands are incompatible with each other.

Details

Role conflict occurs when the expectations of multiple roles assigned to one person contradict or are incompatible with each other.

There are two types: intra-role conflict (contradictory expectations within a single role) and inter-role conflict (conflict between different roles, such as being an employee and a parent).

Role conflict is associated with job stress, dissatisfaction, and intention to leave a job.

It helps to clarify your priorities and, when necessary, communicate openly with supervisors or colleagues.

Mindy says: Accepting that you cannot do everything perfectly is also an important step toward managing role conflict.

💡 Real-Life Example

You experience role conflict when supervisor A says 'Focus on this project' while supervisor B says 'Take care of the other task first' — leaving you caught between two incompatible demands.
