Relaxation Response

Relaxation Response

The opposite of the stress response, the relaxation response is a physiological state where you consciously calm both body and mind.

Details

The relaxation response is a concept named by Dr. Herbert Benson, describing the physiological state opposite to the stress response (fight-or-flight). It involves a decrease in heart rate, lowered blood pressure, stabilized breathing, and muscle relaxation. It can be intentionally induced through meditation, deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, yoga, and similar practices.

Practicing the relaxation response regularly can help prevent health problems caused by chronic stress. Even taking 10 to 20 minutes a day to relax can bring about significant change.

Mindy says: Think of the relaxation response as your body's built-in reset button — with a little practice, you can learn to press it whenever you need it.

💡 Real-Life Example

When you take slow, deep breaths and feel your heartbeat slow down and your muscles loosen — that feeling is the relaxation response in action.
