Peak-End Rule

Peak-End Rule

When evaluating an experience, we tend to judge it based on the most intense moment (peak) and the final moment (end), rather than the experience as a whole.

Details

What is the Peak-End Rule?

The Peak-End Rule is a cognitive tendency where we evaluate past experiences based not on the overall average, but on the most intense moment (peak) and the moment the experience ends (end). Let's explore this together with Mindy.

Daniel Kahneman's Research

Nobel Prize-winning economist Daniel Kahneman discovered this rule. In his famous cold water experiment, participants preferred an experience of submerging their hand in cold water for 60 seconds followed by 30 more seconds in slightly warmer water (90 seconds total) over just the 60-second version. The total discomfort was greater, but because the ending improved, they preferred it.

The Peak-End Rule in Everyday Life

When it comes to travel, the most memorable moment and the experience of the final day determine how we remember the entire trip — more than the overall enjoyment. Similarly, at a restaurant, the dessert (end) and the most impressive dish (peak) shape the overall evaluation more than the food in general.

Meaning for Mental Health

Knowing this rule helps you view your experiences with a broader perspective. When you feel like your day was bad, you can ask yourself whether the entire day was truly bad, or whether it was just a specific moment or the end of the day that felt difficult.

Mindy's Warm Advice

Try to create a small positive moment at the end of your day. A warm cup of tea or one song you love is enough. A good ending can reshape the memory of your entire day. Mindy is here to help you close each day on a good note.

💡 Real-Life Example

Even if most of a 2-hour movie was ordinary, remembering it as a 'great film' because the climax was moving and the ending was satisfying — that's the Peak-End Rule.
