Negative Affect

Negative Affect

A general term for uncomfortable feelings like sadness, anxiety, and anger. These aren't bad emotions — they're necessary ones.

Details

Negative affect refers to emotions that feel uncomfortable, such as anxiety, sadness, anger, and fear.

Despite the word 'negative,' these emotions aren't bad. They play an important role — alerting us to danger and signaling that something in our life may need to change.

Rather than trying to get rid of negative affect, try asking yourself: 'What is this feeling trying to tell me?' When you understand the message behind an emotion, you can respond to it more wisely. — Mindy

💡 Real-Life Example

'Feeling anxious before an exam' — it's a form of negative affect, but it's also a signal telling you to prepare.
