What is Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention?
Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) is a program that combines mindfulness meditation with cognitive-behavioral relapse prevention techniques. It was developed to prevent relapse in substance use disorders and behavioral addictions.
The Core of the Program
The heart of MBRP is building the ability to observe cravings and urges just as they are, without automatically reacting to them. This is called 'urge surfing' — the practice of watching a craving rise like a wave and naturally pass, without being swept away by it.
Key Components
Structured as an 8-week course, MBRP combines meditation practices such as breath meditation, body scan, and mindful movement with strategies for recognizing and coping with relapse risk factors. You learn to use mindfulness to handle relapse triggers like stress, negative emotions, and social pressure.
Mindy's Warm Guidance
Mindy explains that MBRP helps you build the power to make your own choices rather than being pulled along by impulses. When a craving arrives, pausing and telling yourself 'this feeling will pass soon' is the first step in relapse prevention. On the journey of recovery, you may stumble — but what matters most is getting back up.
💡 Real-Life Example
When a wave of craving for alcohol washed over me, I observed the sensation like a wave and waited for it to pass naturally.
