Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1934–2021)
A Hungarian-born American psychologist and the founder of Flow theory. One of the central figures in positive psychology, he scientifically explored when humans are at their happiest and most creative.
Flow refers to a state of Optimal Experience in which a person is so completely absorbed in an activity that they lose track of time, self-consciousness fades away, and the activity itself becomes its own reward. Csikszentmihalyi systematized this phenomenon by interviewing thousands of artists, athletes, scientists, and everyday people.
Several conditions are necessary for flow to occur. There must be an appropriate balance between the difficulty of the task and the individual's skill level, along with clear goals and immediate feedback. If a task is too easy, boredom sets in; if it is too difficult, anxiety arises. Csikszentmihalyi demonstrated that flow is possible in all areas of life — work, play, creative pursuits, and physical activity — and that people who frequently experience flow report higher life satisfaction and greater happiness.
*Mindy's note: Think about a time when you were so engaged in something that hours felt like minutes. That was likely a flow experience — and it's something you can intentionally cultivate in your daily life.*
💡 Real-Life Example
Happiness is not something that happens by chance. It is something that must be prepared for, cultivated, and personally managed.
