Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1934–2021)
A Hungarian-born American psychologist and the creator of Flow theory. As one of the key figures in positive psychology, he scientifically explored when humans feel their happiest and most creative.
Flow is a state of optimal experience in which a person becomes completely absorbed in an activity, loses track of time, self-consciousness fades, and the activity itself becomes its own reward. Csikszentmihalyi systematized this phenomenon by interviewing thousands of people — artists, athletes, scientists, and everyday individuals.
For flow to occur, certain conditions are needed: the difficulty of the task and the person's skill level must be well-balanced, with clear goals and immediate feedback. If it is too easy, boredom sets in; if too difficult, anxiety arises. Csikszentmihalyi showed that flow is possible in all areas of life — work, play, creative pursuits, sports — and that people who frequently experience flow report higher life satisfaction and happiness.
