Memory consolidation is the process by which new memories, initially unstable, become stably stored as long-term memories over time. Just like wet cement that hardens and becomes solid, memories also need time to become firmly established.
The Process of Memory Consolidation
Synaptic Consolidation
This process occurs within a few hours after an experience. As the connections between nerve cells (synapses) are strengthened, the initial traces of a memory are formed.
Systems Consolidation
This process takes much longer. Memories initially stored in the hippocampus gradually become distributed across various regions of the cerebral cortex. Through this process, memories can be maintained long-term without depending on the hippocampus.
