What Is Managing Overthinking?

Overthinking means continuously and repeatedly dwelling on a single topic without ever reaching a conclusion, while anxiety and stress only grow worse. Mindy is here to help you sort through the noise when your mind feels cluttered.

Characteristics of Overthinking

  • Repeatedly replaying past events with thoughts like 'I should have done it differently back then'
  • Constantly imagining worst-case scenarios about things that haven't happened yet
  • Being unable to make a decision because you endlessly compare pros and cons
  • Over-analyzing the hidden meanings behind other people's words or actions
  • How Overthinking Affects You

Overthinking goes beyond simple worry — it leads to disrupted sleep, reduced concentration, and mental exhaustion. Over time, it can increase the risk of anxiety disorders or depression. Thinking more doesn't lead to better decisions either. Instead, you fall into Analysis Paralysis, where thinking itself becomes the obstacle.

    Ways to Manage Overthinking

    1. Label Your Thoughts

When overthinking begins, try recognizing it by saying, 'Ah, I'm overthinking right now.' Simply noticing that you're caught in a thought spiral can reduce its power over you.

    2. Schedule Worry Time

Set aside just 15 minutes a day dedicated to worrying. When worries arise outside that window, tell yourself, 'I'll deal with this during worry time later.' Surprisingly, by the time worry time arrives, many concerns no longer feel important.

    3. Shift to Action

Transform pure thinking into concrete action. If a decision needs to be made, choose something 'good enough' and move forward. There is no perfect decision.

    4. Get Your Body Moving

Physical activities like walking, exercising, or stretching break the cycle of repetitive thoughts. Focusing on your body gives your mind a chance to rest.

    5. Practice Mindfulness

Try paying attention to the present moment. Focusing on the taste of what you're eating or the sensation of your feet as you walk can pull you out of overthinking about the past or future.

    6. Shift Your Perspective

Ask yourself, 'Will this still matter in 5 years?' Most worries are things that become trivial with time.

    A Word from Mindy

Thinking deeply can be a sign that you are a sensitive and thoughtful person. But when those thoughts start to wear you down, it's also important to practice stopping them. Mindy will practice alongside you.

    💡 Real-Life Example

After endlessly analyzing how someone reacted to a message I sent, I recognized, 'I'm overthinking right now,' and went for a walk — and I felt so much lighter afterward.
