Interoception
Interoception
The ability to sense what is happening inside your body — heartbeat, breath, hunger, tension — forming the bodily foundation of emotion and self-awareness.

What Is Interoception?
Interoception is the sense of the body's internal state. It includes awareness of heartbeat, breathing, hunger, thirst, temperature, pain, tension, and the subtle physical feelings that underlie emotions. Often called the 'sixth sense,' it is the body's way of telling the brain what it needs.
Interoception and Emotion
Emotions are not just mental events — they arise from bodily sensations. Anxiety feels like a racing heart; grief like heaviness in the chest; joy like warmth expanding in the ribcage. People with strong interoceptive awareness can recognise and regulate emotions more effectively.
Building Interoceptive Awareness
Body scan meditation, mindful breathing, and keeping a body-emotion journal ('what am I feeling in my body right now?') all strengthen interoception. Somatic therapy approaches directly target this awareness for healing.
Mindy says: "Your body's quiet signals are its most honest voice. Take a moment today to ask not just 'how am I thinking?' but 'how am I feeling in my body?' The answer might surprise you."
💡 Real-Life Example
