What Is High-Functioning Anxiety?
High-functioning anxiety isn't an official diagnosis, but it describes a widely recognised pattern: appearing organised, accomplished, and capable externally while internally battling near-constant worry, self-doubt, and catastrophic thinking. Because these people 'function well,' their struggle often goes unnoticed — even by themselves.
The Hidden Toll
Common signs include: checking and re-checking completed work, lying awake running worst-case scenarios, inability to say no for fear of letting someone down, physical symptoms like tight shoulders or an upset stomach, and a brief moment of relief after success that quickly gives way to the next worry.
Finding Relief
Recognising the anxiety is the first step. Practise 'good enough' rather than perfect. Notice body tension as an early warning. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is especially effective for changing the thought patterns that fuel this cycle.
Mindy says: "Just because you seem fine on the outside doesn't mean you don't deserve support. You don't have to keep running at full speed. It's okay to pause and listen to the quiet voice inside."
