Generativity vs. Stagnation

Generativity vs. Stagnation

In middle adulthood, this is the challenge of contributing to the next generation and leaving behind something meaningful.

Details

Generativity vs. Stagnation is the task of Stage 7 (middle adulthood) in Erikson's theory of development.

Generativity is the desire to create, teach, and contribute something valuable for the next generation. When this need goes unfulfilled, a person may feel that life has become stagnant and meaningless.

It doesn't have to mean raising children. You can express generativity in many ways — mentoring younger colleagues, volunteering, creative work, and more. As Mindy would say, finding your own way to give back is what matters most.

💡 Real-Life Example

Finding meaning through raising children, mentoring others, or contributing to society.
