Enabler

Enabler

An enabler is a person who, regardless of their intentions, helps sustain another person's harmful behavior or addiction. Their actions often prevent the other person from facing the consequences of their choices.

Details

An enabler is someone who creates an environment that allows another person's destructive or harmful behavior to continue.

What Is an Enabler?

Let's explore this together with Mindy. Enablers almost always start from a place of good intentions. They want to help someone they love, avoid conflict, and ease the other person's pain. However, the result is that they prevent the person from confronting their problematic behavior and ultimately rob them of the opportunity to change.

Behavioral Patterns of an Enabler

  • Making excuses: They make excuses on behalf of the other person for their problematic behavior
  • Cleaning up the mess: They fix the problems the other person creates
  • Denying reality: They minimize issues by saying things like 'It's not that serious' or 'Everything will be fine'
  • Suppressing emotions: They hold back their true feelings to avoid upsetting the other person
  • Abandoning boundaries: They fail to set clear limits and continuously give in
  • Enablers in Dark Psychology

Manipulators and narcissists often have an enabler nearby. The enabler justifies the manipulator's behavior and indirectly participates in the manipulation by telling victims to 'just put up with it' or 'you need to be more understanding.' This role is similar to what is known as 'Flying Monkeys.'

    A Warm Word from Mindy

Wanting to help someone you love is a beautiful thing. But true help means supporting the other person so they can face their own problems and grow on their own. Loving someone while maintaining your own healthy boundaries — that is actually a deeper and more meaningful form of love.

    💡 Real-Life Example

Hiding a husband's alcohol addiction from the family, and calling his workplace on his behalf to make excuses when he is too impaired to go to work.
