Defense Mechanisms

Defense Mechanisms

Unconscious psychological strategies used to protect oneself from anxiety or distressing thoughts. They operate automatically to shield the ego from painful emotions and unacceptable impulses.

Details

Defense Mechanisms is a concept systematized by Anna Freud, referring to unconscious psychological strategies that protect the ego from painful emotions such as anxiety, guilt, and shame, as well as thoughts that are difficult to accept.

Immature Defense Mechanisms

  • Projection: Attributing one's own unacceptable feelings to others ('I'm not the one who's angry — they are')
  • Acting Out: Expressing emotions through behavior rather than words (impulsive actions)
  • Splitting: Viewing people or situations as entirely good or entirely bad
  • Intermediate Defense Mechanisms

  • Reaction Formation: Behaving in the opposite way to what one actually feels
  • Repression: Pushing painful memories or impulses into the unconscious
  • Rationalization: Explaining away unacceptable behavior with logical-sounding reasons
  • Mature Defense Mechanisms

  • Sublimation: Redirecting unacceptable impulses into socially useful outlets (aggression → sports)
  • Humor: Coping with painful situations through humor
  • Altruism: Resolving inner conflict by helping others
  • If you find yourself relying on certain defense mechanisms repeatedly, speaking with a counselor like Mindy can help you explore healthier ways of managing difficult emotions.

    💡 Real-Life Example

After failing an exam, telling yourself 'The questions were completely unfair' rather than acknowledging the need to study more — this is an example of rationalization as a defense mechanism.
