Containment

In therapy, the process of receiving and helping a person make sense of feelings that seem too overwhelming to hold alone.

The therapist responds steadily to distress instead of dismissing it or becoming overwhelmed by it. Feeling understood and safe can gradually help the client recognize and manage difficult emotions themselves.

💡 Real-Life Example

When a client is trembling with anxiety, the therapist listens calmly, names how frightening the moment feels, and helps the client stay grounded.
