chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy

A brain disease linked to repeated head impacts that can later affect memory, mood, and behavior.

Details

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, is a degenerative brain condition associated with repeated blows to the head or repeated concussions over time. It has been discussed most often in contact sports, but can also affect people exposed to repeated head trauma in other settings. Symptoms may show up years later and can include memory problems, emotional changes, impulsivity, depression, or difficulty with judgment. This is not just about 'getting older' or 'having a bad temper.' It can reflect real injury to the brain.

💡 Real-Life Example

A retired athlete who had many concussions begins having worsening memory problems, mood swings, and difficulty controlling impulses years later.
