cerebral cortex

Cerebral Cortex

The outer layer of the brain that supports thinking, language, conscious awareness, and processing what we see, hear, and feel.

Details

The cerebral cortex is the folded outer layer of the brain. It plays a major role in higher thinking, language, awareness, decision-making, and processing sensory information from the world around us. Different areas of the cortex support different functions, such as planning, seeing, hearing, and understanding language. When people talk about the brain’s “thinking” layer, they are often referring to the cerebral cortex.

💡 Real-Life Example

Reading a book, understanding speech, recognizing a face, and planning what to do next all rely heavily on the cerebral cortex.
