Understanding the Mind

central executive

Central Executive

The part of working memory that helps manage attention, shift tasks, and keep mental information organized.

Details

The central executive is the control system in working memory that helps you focus, switch between tasks, update information, and manage what deserves attention right now. It does not store everything itself. Instead, it acts more like a coordinator, helping the mind decide what to hold onto, what to ignore, and what to do next. People notice this ability when they try to plan, multitask, solve problems, or stay focused despite distractions.

💡 Real-Life Example

Following a recipe while watching the stove, remembering the next step, and ignoring your phone all at once depends partly on the central executive.
