Zone of Proximal Development

Zone of Proximal Development

It's the space where you can't quite do something alone, but you can do it with a little help. This is the sweet spot where real learning happens.

Details

The Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) is a concept proposed by Vygotsky, referring to the range of tasks that a learner cannot solve independently but can solve with guidance or support.

The most effective learning happens not with tasks that are too easy (things you can already do) or too hard (things you can't manage even with help), but right in this 'just-right challenge' zone.

When helping someone learn, identifying this zone is the key — and that's something Mindy loves to explore with you.

💡 Real-Life Example

'You can't ride a bike on your own yet, but if someone holds the back of the seat, you can do it' — that's the ZPD in action.
