What Is Weight Stigma?
Weight stigma refers to the phenomenon of judging or discriminating against people negatively based on their weight or body shape. It goes beyond simple teasing and can appear in many areas of life, including employment, healthcare, education, and personal relationships.
Forms of Weight Stigma
Weight stigma appears in many forms: direct discrimination (teasing, bullying, unfair treatment), implicit bias (unconscious negative attitudes), and internalized stigma (negative perceptions of oneself). In particular, media portrayals that depict only certain body types as ideal also reinforce weight stigma.
Effects on Mental Health
Weight stigma can cause serious mental health problems including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, eating disorders, and social withdrawal. Ironically, weight stigma tends to worsen health rather than promote healthy behaviors — it can lead to stress eating, avoidance of exercise, and avoidance of medical care.
Building a Healthier Perspective
Health cannot be judged by a number on a scale alone. It is important to respect the diversity of all body types and focus on healthy behaviors themselves. Cultivating self-compassion and respect for your own body is the first step.
A Word from Mindy
Your worth is not determined by the number on a scale. Whatever you look like, you deserve respect and you deserve to be loved. Try to hold a warm and gentle attitude toward your own body.
💡 Real-Life Example
A student who is overweight becomes reluctant to go to school due to teasing from peers, gradually withdraws socially, and begins experiencing depression — this is a classic example of the impact of weight stigma.
