What is Victimology?

Victimology is a discipline that comprehensively studies the experiences of crime victims, the psychological and social impact of victimization, victim support systems, and the prevention of harm. While traditional criminology has focused on offenders, victimology places the victim's perspective and needs at the center.

Areas of Study

  • Victimization experience: The psychological, physical, and economic effects of crime on individuals
  • Secondary victimization: The additional psychological distress victims suffer during investigation and trial processes
  • Victim rights: The right to be informed, the right to participate, and the right to protection
  • Recovery process: The pathways to psychological recovery for victims and the factors that support healing
  • What is Secondary Victimization?

Secondary victimization refers to the additional psychological wounds a victim experiences when repeatedly recounting events during police investigations or court proceedings, or when facing blame from others ('Why did you go there?'). This secondary harm can sometimes leave wounds just as deep as the original crime itself.

    Victim Support Systems

In Korea, there are various support organizations including Crime Victim Support Centers, Sunflower Centers (for sexual and domestic violence), and Smile Centers (psychological support for crime victims). If you have experienced victimization, you do not have to face it alone. Reaching out for help is an act of courage.
